Allen’s journey to becoming an expert in operational leadership was not born from theory, but from the school of hard knocks. Early in his career, he admits he fell into the classic trap that claims many first-time supervisors: the "technical authority" fallacy.

"I thought I was being a strong leader by pushing hard operationally," Allen reflects. "In reality, I was bulldozing right over the very people who actually had to get the work done. I thought that by demonstrating my technical prowess and demanding results, I was leading. Instead, I was creating resistance, fostering turnover, and causing operational instability."

This epiphany came through a series of "spectacular failures" and messy, human-centric challenges. Over three decades, Allen moved from the front lines into management, learning that the crew is the most observant entity in the facility. "The crew is watching everything," he says. "Perception is reality out on that shop floor. If you aren’t consistent, they know."

These lessons eventually culminated in the publication of his book, Operational Leadership Uncensored: Real Talk for Burgeoning Manufacturing Leaders. The book eschews academic jargon in favor of accounts of real events—the wins, the losses, and the "messy human stuff" that occurs between the two.
